Understanding the threat

Banana killer refers to two deadly diseases that affect banana plants:

Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (TR4)

A fungal disease that enters banana plants through the roots, clogging their vascular system and ultimately leading to plant death. This poses a major risk to popular banana varieties like the Cavendish and Indian varieties such as Yelakki.

Sigatoka

A fungal disease caused by Mycosphaerella fijiensis and Pseudocercospora fijiensis, is a highly destructive foliar disease that globally impacts the banana industry. It leads to significant economic losses by reducing leaf surface area, compromising fruit quality, and decreasing shelf life.

Why it Really Matters

Protecting our banana industry: Why it matters

The threat of Fusarium Wilt Disease (TR4) poses a significant risk to the global banana industry, which sustains millions of people worldwide. With over 400 banana varieties cultivated globally, and the Cavendish banana alone accounting for 47% of production, the impact of TR4 on supply chains is substantial. In 2022, global banana exports reached a staggering 19.6 million metric tons (as per FAO.org), further highlighting the urgency of addressing this destructive disease.

India, being one of the largest banana producers with an annual output of 27 million tons, is particularly susceptible to TR4’s widespread impact. In some states, where vulnerable cultivars are extensively grown, disease severity has escalated to alarming levels of 80-90%.
